Geranium Dress Two Ways

Rae Hoekstra, designer of Made By Rae fabrics and patterns, has really dialed in fun and whimsical style for kids and adults alike. Her Geranium Dress pattern and matching adult Washi Dress pattern is wonderfully playful and versatile, not to mention quick to make. You will love how delightful these are to put together. I made the dress version and Tiffani made the tunic version for some very special little ladies and they both turned out fantastic. If this gives you the itch to make one yourself, Tiffani will be teaching a class this summer at Fancy Tiger!

Kaylee's Geranium Dress

Pattern: Made by Rae Geranium Dress
Size: 6-12 months, View A, Dress Length
Materials: 1 yard Tiny Fox Brown Japanese Double Gauze,
1/2 yard Double Gauze Dark Brown for lining
Modifications: Temporary hem at 1 1/2”

I just love when my friends and co-workers have babies because it is a great excuse for me to make the cutest little garments in the most precious fabrics. When Fancy Tiger knitting teacher, Lizz, had baby Maggie this past fall, I knew a Geranium dress was in her future. When these teeny-tiny foxes arrived in the softest Japanese double gauze, I knew I had a winner. The wide open, 3-button back make this dress easy to slip on and off. Snaps definitely would make things a bit easier, but I couldn't resist these precious, natural wooden flower buttons.

Maggie is not yet 6 months old, but I went ahead and made the 6-12 month size because I wanted to be sure that it would fit during the hot summer months and I know that she is a very tall little lady for her age. It fits pretty well, but the dress version was a bit long (even for with her extra height) so I just did a quick temporary tacked hem so that it can be easily let down when she grows.

When sewing the bodice lining down, the pattern has you stitch in the ditch of the gathered skirt. I followed these instructions and it came it great, but if you want to save yourself some hassle go ahead and top stitch 1/8” up on the actual bodice. You will save yourself a bunch of time without sacrificing much at all, especially if your fabric will hide the stitch line pretty well anyway.

Tiffani's Geranium Tunic

Pattern: Made by Rae Geranium Dress
Size made: 12-18 months, View A, with no flutter sleeves, Tunic length
Fabric: 1 yard Liberty Gallymoggers Reynard in Grey (out of stock, but we have it in yellow), 1/2 lining fabric
Modifications: Finished with a coordinated bias tape hem

My little babe, Quinn is turning 1 year next month and I had my heart set on making her a birthday dress out of Liberty of London. I wanted something simple, feminine and adorable, so the Geranium was the perfect fit. I love that this pattern has so many variations, from a keyhole cutout in the neckline to fluttery sleeves to clean and simple pleats, this pattern really has everything.

I'm excited to be teaching this class this summer and I hope you'll come make this adorable dress for the loved little girl in your life.
