Summer of Basics Update: Jaime's Goji Skirt

We are well into the Summer of Basics, a fun summer sewing project that Karen Templer of Fringe Association dreamt up, and I finally finished my first make for it: a perfectly simple black skirt.

Goji Skirt in Brussels Washer Black

Pattern: Goji Skirt by Deer and Doe
Fabric: Brussels Washer in Black
Size Made: 38
Modifications: None

The Summer of Basics is about making 3 garments in a summer that you consider to be basic wardrobe staples. When thinking about this, I couldn't believe I don't own a black skirt. My black jeans get worn all the time and I love wearing skirts. This was definitely a missing link in my wardrobe. Liesl Gibson's Everyday Skirt is my go-to skirt pattern, but I wanted to try something new for this. I landed on the Goji Skirt by Deer and Doe. This skirt has an easy fit and elastic waist with a drawstring. It also features adorable pockets (a must in any basic).

My fabric choice was easy. Brussels Washer is a lovely fabric for drapey skirts with its linen/rayon blend. It has the hand and look of linen, but the rayon gives it a beautiful drape. It will also still look great after a day of wear and isn't prone to wrinkling as much as 100% linen would.

The result of my first Summer of Basics make: A+, a total win. A basic, easy to wear, black skirt. I can dress it up with a silk top and booties or it is comfortable to wear with a tank top and sandals. The pattern sewed up without any hitches and the elastic waist makes it very easy to fit. The patch pockets are adorable and super subtle in black. I love this skirt and look forward to wearing it in all seasons, adding tights and boots in the colder months.
