Shetland 2017: Part 6 Bousta Beanie

The best way to memorialize a trip as a crafter is to make something with supplies purchased during your travels. For my Shetland trip, I knit a Bousta Beanie hat using some Uradale yarn I purchased at the farm from Ronnie and Sue.

Pattern: Bousta Beanie by Gudrun Johnston
Yarn: Uradale Farm Organic Shetland Jumper weight in Beremeal, Moss Heath, and Morrit (or use Jamieson + Smith 2-ply Jumper weight)
Modifications: None

The Bousta Beanie hat is a colorwork hat designed by Gudrun Johnston for Shetland Wool Week. Shetland Wool Week happens every October and is a gathering of designers, farmers, and wool industry people to promote and educate about Shetland wool. Every year, there is a free pattern designed to promote Shetland yarns. Since Gudrun Johnston organized this trip that I was on (and her and Maryjane wore their adorable hats every day!), this was the perfect project for me to knit. Gudrun wrote this pattern for all the available yarns of Shetland: Jamieson's, Jamieson and Smith and Uradale. The hat uses 3 colors of fingering weight yarn (50 g each of the main color and 25 g each of the two contrast colors). I choose to knit mine in Uradale Organic Shetland since meeting farmers Ronnie and Sue was one of the highlights of my trip.

I cast-on for my Bousta Beanie on my last day on Shetland in my favorite coffee shop in Lerwick, Mareel. I knit it at Mareel and then I knit it on the 13-hour ferry back to the mainland. I had a long layover in Aberdeen Scotland so I knit it on the beach and in coffee shops in Aberdeen. I knit it on my flight from Aberdeen to Reykjavik and then on my flight from Reykjavik to Denver. The simple and graphic three-color pattern is fun and addictive to knit making it the perfect project to keep me occupied during my long journey home. I finished the hat during my last flight. Each stitch of this hat contains memories of an amazing trip to Shetland. ♥
