Constellation Blocks: 12 Signs Astrological Quilt
This stunning queen sized quilt top was made using all twelve of the constellation block patterns. The quilt is like a window to a sky full of stars--it's like you've captured the night sky and brought it right into your home! It's a really fun project to make over the course of a year, finishing each block during the month of the astrological sign.
Fabric: Kona Cotton Nautical (6-1/2 yards for background), a mix of yellow solid scraps for star fabric: Citrus, Squash, Sprout
This celestial wonder has all the astrological constellations represented. The 20" blocks are spaced apart with additional background fabric, so they each have a bit of room to stand out. From left to right, starting at the top, the first row is Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. Row 2: Aries, Taurus, Gemini. Row 3: Cancer, Leo, Virgo. Row 4: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius.
I really like the look of using a mix of shades of yellow for the stars. I love the twinkling effect that this creates. When planning and sewing up the samples for the quilt, I looked at star charts with star magnitudes charted out, and chose my brightest fabrics to be the brightest stars. Did you know that stars emit different colors of light? If you want to get really astronomically exact you could choose star fabrics in pale shades of white, yellow, red and blue--all the hues that stars come in!
