Laura's Climb Socks

Although I’ve been a knitter for many years, I have never made a pair of socks until now. Two of the other ladies who work at Fancy Tiger, Kelly and Kaylee, were in the same boat, so we all decided to tackle our first socks together! We made the Climb socks from Jane Richmond and Shannon Cook Journey book because of their simple, classic look. Plus, I’ve made other patterns out of Journey before, and I’m a fan of the simple patterns and general aesthetic of the entire book.

Pattern: Climb by Jane Richmond from Journey
Size Made: Small (8 inch foot circumference)
Yarn Used: Cascade Heritage Sock in Limestone, Madelinetosh Twist Light
in Robin Red Breast and Farmhouse White
Modifications: None

Even though this was my first pair of socks, it certainly will not be my last. I have already started another pair and I can see many others in my future. There is something special about these little knits! They are also the perfect late summer knitting project when it is too hot to be buried under the bulk of a sweater or blanket, but you want to start working on projects that you can have ready to wear in the fall.

When I first began knitting these socks I was feeling nervous because I had never done a Turkish cast on before, but I was pleased to discover a Youtube video of Jane Richmond demonstrating how to do it. I love it when designers make instructional videos! It was exactly the confidence booster that I needed. The Turkish cast on ended up being surprisingly uncomplicated, and I liked the look of it so much that I just used the same cast on for my next pair of socks too, even though that pattern called for a different technique.

The Climb socks were a great first sock pattern because of Jane Richmond’s clear and concise instructions. Turning the heel, which I had heard could be tricky, ended up being a breeze, and the distance between each sock’s toe and heel was just right. I also loved how tidy the sewn bind off made the tops of my sock look.
